Brother Promotes Sister’s New CD
A.K.A: Right Eye Records Releases Debut Album By Skylar’s Dream
Colin Campbell, the President of Right Eye Records (RER), announces a CD release concert on Saturday, November 27 at 7:00 PM at the Darien Depot for his sister, Caroline Campbell, and Alex Spanos’s new CD. The name of their band is Skylar’s Dream and their debut 13-song CD is titled “A Parting Gift”. Campbell will also be promoting this show with Clam Chowder Productions, a company he started in Darien in 2000.
Alex Spanos, a Darien resident and senior at the Rye Country Day School, is a prolific songwriter and guitarist, and Caroline Campbell, a Darien resident and freshman at Bucknell University, is a powerful female vocalist and songwriter as well. They have been practicing for the past year and perfecting their songs with great guitar work and inpspiring lyrics. Alex and Caroline originally met in second grade at Ox Ridge School, and they reconnected when they had back to back lessons at their guitar teacher’s house in New Canaan. Their next meeting was on the ice when Alex was playing goalie for Rye and Caroline played defense for the King Low Heywood Thomas boy’s team. Alex asked Caroline if she “liked to sing?” and asked her to stop by and hear some of his songs. One day Caroline stopped by to take him up on the offer, and they have been working together ever since, when their schedules permit. They played their first show in January 2004 at the SHAC at Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien, opening for a Tooth and Nail Records band called Watashi Wa. They kept writing, recording, and improving all spring and by July of 2004, after three more recording sessions, they felt that it was time to press their first CD.
Skylar’s Dream creates music that has a healthy mix of emo, pop, and rock, and they intertwine their vocals to produce catchy and powerful songs. Fans of bands such as Dashboard Confessional, John Mayer, Death Cab for Cutie, and Michelle Branch will surely like their infectious brand of pop-rock. They have a wide range of musical interests and influences, and therefore they are hoping to appeal to the mainstream pop-alternative crowd, while still appealing to the punk, emo, and pop-rock crowd, where they get their original roots and inspiration. Check out www.skylarsdream.com for more information on the band and to hear their music.
The concert on November 27th will be at the Darien Depot from 7 to 11 PM and will also feature an upcoming punk-emo-rock band from Buffalo, New York called This Day & Age (111 Records), as well as The Good Fight (a punk rock band from Darien), and other local bands. The show is only $5.00 at the door or $12.00 with the Skylar’s Dream CD. There is a limited amount of spots open to non-Darien residents, so to be guaranteed a spot, please email info@righteyerecords.com. The Depot is located at 45 Heights Road in Darien and can be contacted at (203)-655-0812 or www.dariendepot.org.
Clam Chowder Productions LLC has booked over 100 shows and concerts in Connecticut, New York, and Ohio over the last five years. In Darien alone, Campbell has booked indie and major label bands such as AutoPilot Off (Island Records), Catch 22 (Victory Records), Squad 5-0 (Island Records), and Relient K (Gotee/Capital Records), as well as many other big and small acts from around the U.S.A. The biggest success story, though, was a show that Campbell promoted in 2001 at the Depot for the kickoff CD release show for Right Eye Records, where Brand New (Triple Crown Records) played, and about 80 people attended, it was their second time playing inn CT. At the time, Brand New was just an upstart Long Island band with a demo out. They have since sold sell hundreds of thousands of albums, consistently sell out the Roseland Ballroom (3,500 people), and are considered one of the biggest upcoming bands in New York and in the country. Campbell has a knack for booking bands before they break big into the mainstream.
Right Eye Records has been releasing pop-punk, ska, post-hardcore, and emo-rock bands’ CDs since 2001. The Skylar’s Dream CD is the eighth release and the first attempt at marketing more towards the pop music crowd. The label has signed and released CDs by bands from New York, Vermont, upstate Connecticut, New Jersey, and Ohio. It is now focused on working with hometown artists. The label did a limited release of the “Broken_Fences” CD in August by another Darien band, The Good Fight, who are also playing at the concert on November 27th. The Good Fight is a progressive punk rock band that mixes emo, pop, and hardcore stylings with very unique vocals to produce a hard-hitting, ground-breaking sound.
